President Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to respond after Iran launched a number of ballistic missiles towards Israeli territory on Sunday evening.
In what was arguably the most significant escalation in hostilities since a ceasefire was agreed to in mid-April, Iran launched at least 10 missiles towards Israeli territory. The regime stated that the strikes were launched in response to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, which they described as a violation of the ceasefire there.
Israeli military officials stated that all missiles were successfully shot down, and no casualties or significant damage were reported. Sirens activated in parts of northern Israel, but officials confirmed the threat was fully neutralized not long after the opening launches.
President Donald Trump addressed the developments in statements to reporters on the same day. In a telephone interview with the Financial Times, Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would have no choice but to accept any deal the United States negotiates with Iran.
“He won’t have any choice. I call the shots. I call all the shots. He [Netanyahu] doesn’t call the shots,” Trump told the outlet.
The president emphasized that Israel should exercise restraint in order to secure a lasting peace agreement in the conflict. Trump stated that the attack “is not going to have any impact on the deal. We’ll see how it ends up. But they [the missile strikes on Israel] were attacks that did not kick at all. It’s one of those things that’s been going for 3,000 years, or 47 years, depending on how you count.”
Trump further indicated in his responses to reporters that he was “not happy” with the Israeli strikes carried out in Lebanon earlier in the day. He described those actions as uncoordinated with the United States and expressed the view that they risked complicating ongoing diplomatic initiatives with Iran.
In related comments, he referenced a strong working relationship with Netanyahu but emphasized the need to pause certain operations to support broader negotiations.

The June 7 Iranian missile barrage followed Israeli strikes that killed two and wounded 11 in Beirut, according to reports. Iranian officials framed the missile operation, sometimes referred to in media as part of “Operation True Promise 5,” as a limited response, with warnings of further action if Israeli operations in Lebanon persisted.
Israel has stated that the strikes were launched in response to Hezbollah rocket attacks targeting northern Israel.
Following the phone call with President Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting of his security council in order to discuss further options. In an official statement, the Israeli Defense Forces stated that strikes against Iranian targets could begin as soon as the order is given.
It is unclear whether Israel intends to respond to the attacks as of this report.
