England’s tough summer just got tougher as ICC issued a 12-point deduction to the English team following their loss against New Zealand in the second Test match at The Oval.

The deduction and a 50 percent match fee fine came after the English team was found 12 overs short of over rate after making all the adjustments.
According to ICC, “In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 per cent of the match fee.
“In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, 12 World Test Championship points have been deducted from England’s points total.”

The sanctions come in the wake of the disappointing defeat in London, where New Zealand won the match with an innings of 253 runs, with Matt Henry picking 11 wickets for 109 runs.
Joe Root accepts ICC punishment after England’s over-rate breach
While England’s 12-point and 50 percent match fee punishment was meted out by Andy Pycroft, who is an ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees member, England’s stand-in skipper Joe Root pleaded guilty to maintaining the slow over rate in the second Test against New Zealand and thus agreed with the penalty suggested; therefore, no hearing was necessary.
The charges were collectively leveled by on-field umpires Adrian Holdstock and Nitin Menon, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd.

What England’s 12-point deduction means for their WTC final hopes
The loss to New Zealand aside, the 12-point deduction would have an even bigger effect on England’s World Test Championship (WTC) qualification.
Since only two teams qualify for the WTC final, which is currently scheduled to be held at Lord’s in 2027, each point counts. The WTC table ranks teams by their Percentage of Points Taken (PCT), not by total points. Deductions (DED) affect the PCT because all deductions are considered as points played for in the table.

England has had a history of being punished for slow over-rates in the past, and after the two-point deduction in the India series, this deduction means that England now has little margin for error.
