WNBA Player Lashes Out Over USA 250 Patches, Urges League To Reconsider

Las Vegas Aces forward Brianna Turner, who serves as treasurer of the WNBA Players Association, publicly urged the league to scrap a reported plan to include “USA 250” patches on player jerseys during the league’s upcoming All-Star game.

The USA 250 patches are part of a broader initiative to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. America250, a nonprofit organization established by Congress to oversee national commemorations, has partnered with Fanatics and several major sports leagues throughout the season.

In January 2026, leagues including the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, MLS, NASCAR, UFC, and WWE announced plans to feature exclusive USA 250 patches on athlete uniforms and performance gear, as well as related logos in venues during key events. Fanatics also planned limited fan apparel collections.

The patches are described as red, white, and blue designs. They have appeared or were scheduled for events such as the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Final, July 4 MLB games, and other marquee moments.

The WNBA was not included in the original January announcement. A Sportico report indicated, however, according to multiple sources familiar with the plans, the league intended to add the patches to jerseys for the All-Star Game scheduled for July 25 in Chicago.

“Like other major sports leagues, we are exploring how best to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary. Nothing has been finalized at this time,” a WNBA spokesperson said.

Turner responded negatively to the report with an X post. “Whoever called for the WNBA all star uniforms to have the USA 250 patch should have thought that through considering no WNBA players would have been free 250 years ago. The majority wouldn’t even have their freedom 100 years ago.”

NEW🚨: Brianna Turner says the WNBA shouldn’t wear ‘USA 250’ patches on All-Star jerseys because of America’s history of slavery.

‘Be so serious.’

Wow. Celebrating 250 years of the nation that gave us the most freedom and opportunity in history is apparently too much. 🫠 pic.twitter.com/FuyDLntxbI

The WNBA has not yet made an official announcement on whether the patches will be included, though Turner’s sentiments could be held by the wider league, which has long embraced far-left politics.
