President Donald Trump has unveiled plans to construct a pedestrian bridge connecting the Lincoln Memorial directly to the Potomac River. Dubbed “the promenade,” the project represents the administration’s latest sweeping initiative to realize historic architectural blueprints and reshape the layout of the National Mall during his second term.
“We’re going to call it the promenade,” Trump explained to reporters on Thursday while in the Oval Office. “They want to call it the Trump Promenade, but I don’t know if I want to do that. But it’s going to be beautiful. It’s a beautiful project, and it’s going to take the Lincoln Memorial right down to the Potomac.”
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum noted that the proposed promenade’s pedestrian bridge would lead visitors “right down to the water” by spanning the highway barriers that currently separate the landmark from the waterfront. He said the project would fulfill long-dormant elements of the early 20th-century McMillan Plan, which envisioned the riverfront as the memorial’s grand gateway.
“Right now, there’s no pedestrian access. People come from around the world they don’t know that 100 yards away is the beautiful Potomac River,” Burgum said.
The announcement comes amid a broader push by the administration to transform the nation’s capital ahead of America’s 250th anniversary. Recent and ongoing projects include restoring and cleaning several historic fountains, refilling the newly restored Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and constructing a large Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) arena on the South Lawn for a June 14th fight card.
