The House approved a war powers resolution aimed at halting the conflict with Iran, delivering a direct rebuke of President Donald Trump’s handling of the military campaign.
The president condemned the action in a social media post on Thursday.
“Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand,” Trump said.
The resolution was passed by a narrow vote of 215 to 208 on Wednesday. Although the resolution was originally set for vote two weeks ago, Republican leaders sent House members home early for a recess when it appeared that the largely Democratic-backed measure had enough Republican support for passage.
“Enough is enough. It is time for the president to do the right thing. The people are tired of suffering because of his war of choice — suffering at the gas pump, suffering at the supermarkets,” said top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee Representative Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), who led the effort.
The commander-in-chief criticized the Republicans who voted for the measure, accusing them of grandstanding.
“The Democrats are fueled by Trump Derangement Syndrome. They would rather have our Country fail than give me another, of many, victories. The four Republicans, that’s a whole other story — They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump continued.
While the vote marks a historic shift, its immediate impact is largely symbolic. Though a handful of Senate Republicans have signaled a willingness to break ranks, a final vote in the upper chamber faces steep GOP resistance. Furthermore, even if the measure clears Congress, it faces an inevitable veto from Trump, whose administration has repeatedly questioned the scope of the War Powers Act. Congress currently lacks the two-thirds supermajority required to override a veto.
Nevertheless, the resolution represents a major development in the political battle over the Iran conflict, as it officially puts Congress on the record condemning the three-month-long military conflict that has rattled the global economy.
“It’s very powerful. We’re inching closer to having both chambers of Congress declare this an illegal war. That’s huge. It’s just becoming more and more untenable, what he has done,” said Representative Jared Huffman (D-Calif.).
Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) mirrored the sentiment when speaking to reporters after the vote: “We’re past the 60 days, so you have two choices. You either follow the law or you change the law. You can’t violate the law. That’s not an option.”
The vote comes as public anxiety grows over the financial toll of the hostilities.
“This reckless and costly war of choice needs to end today. All we need are a handful of Republicans to join us and we can end this reckless and costly war of choice — a war that has cost the American taxpayer over $100 billion — that’s extraordinary — and left our country in a weaker position relative to Iran,” said House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).
Diplomatic talks for a more durable end to the fighting have continued as a fragile ceasefire has held since early April. If the House resolution is taken up and approved by the Senate, it would mark a major legal step against further unilateral military action, even if the immediate effect is not felt.
